The AVG Whitelisting Service

The AVG Whitelisting Service is primarily intended for software manufacturers and vendors who want to prevent losses caused by possible false-positive antivirus detections of their software. A "false positive" is when AVG incorrectly identifies a malware-free application as malicious. False positives may appear from time to time with any antivirus software as a result of new virus definitions added to the program's database.

This service is free of charge, and you do not need to own an AVG license to use it.

How it works

To cover your software, join the AVG Whitelisting Service. To allow us to analyze your files, please provide us with the files or installation packages of your software.

The Digital Certificate

If you are using a digital certificate to sign your code, we can add your digital signature to our Trusted Database. Validation using digital signature is the most effective way to prevent false positives.

The AVG Whitelist FTP

You can upload all relevant files to the AVG Whitelist FTP server or make them available for downloading on your site.

Such files will be automatically downloaded, extracted (in case of archived file or installation package), and scanned by the AVG engine. There is an additional analysis in place to properly identify filetype, calculate checksum, etc. All gathered information about the files are stored in the AVG Whitelist Database.

The data collected by the procedure above is used in our QA processes to help prevent a false-positive detection of your software.

Submitted applications and installation files are not used in the standard end-user way (e.g., installation).

How to deliver files for whitelisting

The digital certificate whitelisting or the account on the AVG Whitelist FTP Server is available upon request. Please contact us using our webform and choose "Application whitelisting" in the dropdown menu.

What the AVG Whitelisting Service is NOT

The AVG Whitelisting Service is NOT intended for emergency false-alarm reports. If you need to report an existing false detection of your software, please contact us using our webform.

Technical details

Key terms

  • AVG Whitelist Service - service described in this document
  • AVG FTP Server - storage provided by AVG Technologies used by AVG Whitelist Service users
  • AVG Whitelist Database - internal AVG database to store data collected by AVG Whitelist Service

Which files should you upload?

  • Installation packages, archives (zip, rar, 7z, iso, etc.)
  • To make your upload faster, you can exclude some files (e.g., huge media files) and upload just the following important filetypes (uploaded separately or packed in an archive): *.bat, *.cmd, *.com, *.exe, *.dll, *.scr, *.cpl, *.drv, *.ocx, *.pif, *.sys, *.vxd, *.vbs, *.js; *.ax, *.acm, *.pdf; *.html
  • If there are "delta-update" files used by your application and the final binary is a result of applying this update, note that we are always interested in the complete, fully updated files. Only these can be used for effective whitelisting.
  • APK filetypes - Android application packages. If you are a mobile developer, please mention it in your request so we can set up your AVG Whitelist account properly.

Which files should you NOT upload?

  • Malware, adware, cracks, or keygens are not welcome
  • Do not upload multimedia files (unless these are part of your application)
  • Multi-volume archives (please let us know if you have such files)
  • Password-protected archives (please let us know if you have such files)

The AVG Whitelist FTP Server connection details:

Address: ftp://whitelist.avg.com
Port: 21, passive mode
Account credentials: provided separately for each account

Please use the "files" subfolder for uploaded files. The AVG Whitelist FTP supports flat structure only—you are not allowed to create folders. If you need to use structure with subfolders ("MyFolderl/MyFolder2/abc.exe"), please pack it with an archiver (WinZip, WinRar, 7zip, etc) before uploading.

Processed files are removed from FTP automatically, and there is no confirmation sent that the uploaded files have been processed.

If you experience any problems with uploading, please provide us with a detailed description of your issue (include any error messages or log files if possible), and the name and version of your FTP client. Also, please mention the file name and size that you are trying to upload.

Make files available to download on your servers

This option is available for customers that cannot use the AVG FTP Server for some reason. Please ask for the availability of this service.

Confidentiality of exchanged information

Collected data are used for mostly automated virus analysis. The AVG Whitelist Database is an internal system used for purposes of malware research only. We are ready to sign an NDA (our standard NDA or your own NDA if needed) to ensure the confidentiality of exchanged information.
