In some situations, you may encounter an issue when your AVG update freezes, or the AVG update or installation of the latest AVG fails. The situation occurs when certain Windows Updates are missing.

Important note: The described issue has been fixed in the latest AVG 2012 program update. Please update your AVG or use the newest AVG installation file first if this solution is applicable.

AVG update may be freezing.

The following error message may be displayed when the update or installation failure occurs:

Error Code: 0xC0070643
Error Message: General internal error
Additional Message: MSI Engine: Failed to install the product.
@AVGMSI_Error 1330
Context: Installation of AVG Core, MSI action failed

Another symptom of this issue may be the Anti-Virus component marked as inactive after the update, or the LinkScanner component marked as partially functional.

Install the latest Root Certificates (the missing Windows Updates) manually:

  1. Download the following file:
  2. If prompted, select to Save the file. We recommend that you save the file to your Desktop.
  3. Run the downloaded file rootsupd.exe.
    • It is necessary to run the file with Administrator permissions. How to check if I'm using Administrative account?
No window will be launched after running the rootsupd.exe file. Your Root Certificates will be updated silently.

Additional steps if the Anti-Virus is inactive and/or LinkScanner is partially functional:

  1. Open the AVG Program.
  2. Click Update now to update your AVG.
  3. Restart your computer.

Technical details:

The issue is caused by missing Windows Root Certificates update. The newest Root Certificates can be obtained through Windows Update, however, it is possible that your computer does not install these updates automatically, as this update is optional for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

After updating the Windows Root Certificates as described above, AVG installation and updates will be applied correctly.
