AVG 8.5 migration to AVG 2012 Business Edition

Users that are currently on AVG 8.5 need to migrate to AVG 2012 to stay fully protected. We have created a step by step guide to help you.

Please note that you are required to have AVG Remote Administration 8.5 installed on your machine before you begin the migration process. If you do not have AVG Remote Administration 8.5 installed please refer to the “Important note before installation”.

Important note before the installation:

  • Workstations with AVG 8.5 will not be able to communicate with new Admin Server 2012, however the list of these stations will be transferred to the AVG Admin Console.
  • All stations that will be upgraded to AVG 2012 will be restarted during the remote installation.
  • When installing AVG remotely using the AVG Network Installer Wizard, please bear in mind that a manual restart is always required in case there is AVG 8.5 on the target stations. Sometimes the restart is needed also when reinstalling AVG 2011/2012. The restart is needed because all old AVG services and drivers are scheduled for removal upon restart, and new drivers and services cannot be started due to this. The result of reinstallation without restart would be an unprotected station.
  • In general, it is recommended to install AVG remotely during off-peak hours, and enable the option "Reboot the computer after finishing AVG 2012 setup if needed". This will ensure that the computer will be unprotected for the shortest possible time.

Note for users of the Windows 2000 operating system:

Installation of AVG 2012 is not supported on operating systems Windows 2000 / Windows 2000 Server, and the upgrade on these operating systems is not possible. Their support has been already ended by Microsoft and we cannot guarantee the maximum level of security. If you are still using one of these operating systems, we recommend that you upgrade the operating system at least to Windows XP, which is supported by Microsoft.

I. Installation of AVG Remote Administration 2012

  1. 1. Download the latest AVG Remote Administration 2012 installation file
    • Please select the AVG Edition based on your license.
    • Download the file AVG Admin 2012 for Windows.
  2. 2. Install the AVG Remote Administration 2012
    • Your valid AVG License Number will be required during the installation.
  3. 3. After the installation, follow the AVG Admin Server Deployment Wizard.
    • When asked, perform a backup of the current database (it is the 8.5 version database).
  4. IMG AVG Data Center role
    • Finish the deployment wizard. It will automatically convert the database.
    • The AVG Admin Server will be started after the wizard.

II. Upgrade AVG 8.5 to AVG 2012 using AVG Network Installer

  1. 1. Run AVG Admin Console from menu Start -> (All) Programs -> AVG 2012 Remote Administration.
  2. 2. In the tree in the left pane, select the item Network installer. A list of all AVG 8.5 clients will be displayed.
  3. 3. Select the clients you want to upgrade, and use the option Install selected stations from the right click menu. In case stations are not in the domain, please use the option Modify list of accounts for remote installation from the right click menu prior to launching network installation.
  4. IMG AVG Data Center role
  5. 4. Follow the wizard and configure all options according to your needs.
    • The default settings are sufficient in most cases and will ensure that the stations will connect to AVG Remote Administration 2012 after the installation.
    • AVG 2012 installation file will be required in the process:
      • If you are installing AVG on workstations only, you can use the automatically downloaded installation package. In case the AVG Network Installer Wizard fails to download it automatically, please download the appropriate package from our website (the filename starts with letters avg_ipw).
  6. IMG AVG Data Center role
      • If you wish to install AVG also on servers, please note that due to different components, it is necessary to install AVG separately with a special installation package (filename starts with letters avg_msw), which is also available in the Download section.
  7. 5. After completing all steps, the wizard will display the installation progress and result.
  8. IMG AVG Data Center role
  9. 6. AVG 8.5 will be uninstalled during the installation process and a restart will be required. After restarting a station, the AVG 2012 installer will be launched automatically.
  10. 7. After finishing the remote installation, AVG 2012 should be successfully installed.
