Pokornyz, Can you please explain how ZoneAlarm is causing a problem? Like with Teatimer, I have been using this version of ZoneAlarm for years alongside AVG without any problems. I just rechecked, and it is configured to allow "AVG update module" (c:\program files\AVG\avgupd.exe version 9.0.0.926) to access the internet. It is the free version, i.e. the only component is the firewall - it doesn't have any anti-virus component. I don't want to uninstall it and not have a firewall installed while ...

Hello aardvark_65, According to provided output it seems like your issue is caused by installed ZoneAlarm (please try to completely uninstall). If it solves your issue you can install only Firewall component back. I also recommend you upgrade AVG to at least AVG 2012. Thank you [signature]

I tried deleting the temporary update files and disabling DNS update, but unfortunately it didn't help - I still get "no new update files are available". Hence I ran msinfo32. However it locks up when I save the msinfo32.nfo file - the progress bar gets to the end, but it freezes on "refreshing system information" for drivers, and I eventually had to end msinfo32 with task manager. It has created a nfo file, but when I double clicked on it it said it was corrupt or an unrecognised version, and ...

Copy this and search it in your start menu C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG SafeGuard toolbar\ChromeRes Once there open the ChromeRes folder and change the "nt" file to "nt-old" 2.) Open Up "My Computer" > Open the C: Drive > Program Files (x86) > AVG SafeGuard toolbar> ChromeRes > Then change the "nt" file to "nt-old"

You should only have 1-residential type protection installed on the system i.e. AVG. Any live protection in both Ad-Aware & Spybot should be disabled & if required only use these 2 utils for additional test scanning purposes. DOES AVG 2011 provide both anti-virus and anti-spyware protection? I ask because he is also running Adaware (live) and Spybot (Tea Timer) and I want him to remove these to see if the PC speeds up. Of course if he is less protected that would not be a good thing.

Since then, the box (to the lower right) where I manually click for updates, always says "Protection is up-to-date" even after a couple of days.
