The AVG Security Toolbar is designed to work with the following operating systems:
- Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit)
- Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit/64-bit)
- Microsoft Windows XP (32-bit/64-bit)
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 6.0 or greater)
- Mozilla Firefox (version 3.0 or greater)
Once installed, the AVG Security Toolbar will appear under your browser's address bar:
The Toolbar comes with the following features:
Our unique Surf-Shield protection blocks harmful content from being displayed on your screen and prevents it from being downloaded to your computer. Enabling this feature will protect you from clicking on a dangerous link or entering a potentially harmful URL into your browser. Should you encounter a malicious site, a screen such as the one below will appear.
A link to the flagged site will appear on your screen should you still wish to visit, though we strongly recommend you refrain from doing so.
AVG Search-Shield evaluates all search results returned from popular search engines like Yahoo!, Google and Bing. Potentially harmful links are flagged by the AVG Security Toolbar, warning unsuspecting users before they accidentally click on them. A rotating AVG icon and question mark will appear next to the link being evaluated, except for those results found through AVG Secure Search. One of the following icons will appear when the evaluation is complete:
The linked page is safe.
The linked page contains no threats but is somewhat suspicious (questionable in origin or motive, therefore not recommended for e-shopping etc.).
The linked page might be safe, but contains links to dangerous pages; is suspected of questionable coding, though shows no immediate threats at the moment.
The linked page contains active threats; access to this page will be blocked.
The linked page is not accessible and could not be scanned.
Please note that when using AVG Secure Search, only those links suspected of being dangerous will be marked. All unmarked links on AVG Secure Search results pages have been checked and are perfectly safe.
You can see further details of a given link by hovering over its individual rating:
Further information includes additional details of the perceived threat, as well as the link's IP address.
The Page Status indicator uses AVG LinkScanner® technology to show you how safe the current page is loaded in your browser. Very similar to AVG's Search-Shield, the page status indicator will provide you a color coded status of the page:
Current page in the browser is safe
Current page in the browser contains no threats but is somewhat suspicious (questionable in origin or motive, therefore not recommended for e-shopping etc.)
Current page might be safe, but contains links to dangerous pages; is suspected of questionable coding, though shows no immediate threats at the moment
Current page is not accessible and could not be scanned
Note: A Red Page Status indicator will not be shown. If a page is dangerous, AVG LinkScanner® will always block these pages.
You may also click on the Page Status Indicator for more information on the current page as well as see how many AVG LinkScanner™ icons have been shown since you installed the AVG Toolbar.
At the bottom of the window is a link to clear the statistics which will reset all counts of AVG icons back to zero. This window can be closed by clicking the “x” in the upper right corner.
By default, the Email Button appears on the AVG Toolbar. Clicking on the button reveals the following menu:
Open email account – Clicking this item will open your selected web email client within the browser.
Check for new e-mails – Clicking this item will immediately check for new mail within your web mail client and display a notification if new mail is found.
Configure email account – Clicking this item will open the following dialog that will allow you to setup your web email client so it can be recognized by the AVG toolbar. Options to select the type of web mail account, entering email address/password, and notification options are all available on this window.
The AVG Security Toolbar allows you to customize your settings. Click on the arrow next to the AVG logo to access the drop-down menu and click on “Options”.
The options dialog box is divided into five sections: General, Useful Buttons, Security and Advanced Options.
The General section allows you to choose which buttons are visible or remain hidden on the AVG Security Toolbar. All buttons are made visible upon installation, but you can hide a particular button by simply un-checking the corresponding box. Likewise, checking a box will make the relevant button visible on the Toolbar.
The Useful Buttons section provides the option to add a shortcut button to the AVG Toolbar for popular Windows applications, giving you quick access right from your browser.
The Skype shortcut option will only be displayed if Skype is installed on your PC. If enabled, a Skype button will be added to the toolbar allowing easy access to Skype.
The Security section allows the user to customize:
AVG Browser Security – This section allows you to customize the AVG LinkScanner® settings. The AVG Search-Shield and AVG Surf-Shield features are automatically enabled and can be disabled by un-checking the appropriate box.
Ratings - This section allows you to customize which types of ratings appear on the search results pages that are returned when you perform a search. All ratings are made visible initially, but you can hide a particular rating by un-checking the box representing the rating you’d like to remove. Likewise, checking a box next to a rating you’d like to see will make it visible on all future search results pages.
Note: the "Safe" or green rating will not be displayed on search results pages generated from AVG Secure Search.
The Advanced Options tab provides the user with the following options:
Default Search Engine – The dropdown display provides a way to change or set the default search provider used for all searches done in the browser.
Address Bar Search – Checking this option will set the search engine used for Address Bar searches to the default search engine.
Search on New Tabs – By checking this option a search box using the default search provider will appear on any new tabs launched in the browser.
Navigation Error - Assists you by displaying an enhanced error page that provides suggestions and search capabilities in the case of a missing or non-existent web page. If you mistype an address, or try to visit a non-existent webpage, AVG will redirect you to a page containing suggestions as to what you might have been looking for. Simply check/uncheck the box “Let AVG make suggestions on browser navigation errors (404/DNS)” to enable/disable this function.
Default Search Engine Protection – Checking this option will prevent other applications from being able to change the default search provider setting that you selected.
Toolbar Re-display - This option reminds you on a weekly basis that you have hidden the AVG Toolbar. Simply uncheck the box if you do not wish to be reminded.
