Hello KW1970, NTUser.dat had been dated in early 2009 so it had not changed since then. I guess we are assuming that the Grisoft and /Startonce entries somehow got into the file and stayed there. - The Windows XP SP2 automatically copy customizations from the administrator profile to the default user profile. This functionality is disabled with Windows XP SP3 (or with Hotfix 887816). You may visit this Microsoft Knowledge Base article to find out more. I see this feature as a probable culprit ...

Update - Problem Resolved!! I apologize for not knowing what I was doing. It finally dawned on me that one cannot view the Default User settings in the Registry directly. One must load a Hive from NTUser.dat as you suggested more than once, edit if necessary, and then unload the Hive. I labeled the hive Test which appeared to be only temporary until it was unloaded. NTUser.dat had been dated in early 2009 so it had not changed since then.
Hello jirka82, I really want to thank you for an Exceptional response to my questions. You have really gone above and beyond what many support organizations would have provided. Thank you so much. I will spend some more time trying to resolve this issue and repeat some of the things we have discussed. I don't know if you have been using WinXP Home but it appears that our results are somewhat different.
Hello KW1970, Is AVGW.exe indeed the First Run Wizard? The AVGW.exe is the AVG Launcher. First Run Wizard is launched with the / runonce parameter (works only if the wizard has not been completed before). AVG user interface (control center) is launched with no parameters. The reason why the newly created accounts contain a registry entry for the First Run Wizard is that this value is taken from the C:/Documents and Settings/Default User/ntuser.dat hive. Deleting the value from the hive resulted ...

Important Update: Earlier today I removed my existing anti-virus program, installed AVG 7.5 downloaded from File Hippo, rebooted, ran a quick scan, rebooted, and powered off. Later I booted the system and uninstalled AVG 7.5 via the WinXP Control Panel. I'm sorry to report that I get the same exact symptom after creating a new WinXP User Account! MSConfig in the new user account shows the AVG Startup Item which is AVGW.exe /Runonce. The Registry for the new user account shows AVGW.exe ...

Thanks very much for your time and help. I assume my GMER Log showed no problems. I also tested for Rootkits and nothing was flagged after a very long scan. I have removed the avgw.exe /runonce registry entries after creating a new WinXP User account and it resolves the problem. I don't believe that entry has been seen in the default user profile. I will try installing and removing AVG7.5 next to see if it corrects the problem. However, here is the latest information. I did have the ...

Hello KW1970, The Startup Item is Program files/AVG7/AVGW.exe /Runonce which shows up in the Registry under Current User, Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version, Run. - This item should be removed after first login of user into Windows. - It will be deleted from .Default profile after AVG uninstallation.
Hello KW1970, I think that the Run key content for new user account should be taken from the C:/Documents and Settings/Default User/ntuser.dat hive (on Windows XP systems). Generally, registry keys in other ControlSets should not be tampered with, as these are in hands of the operating system. - Do you use some registry protection application (like SpyBot...)? - Have you used the delavg.reg registry editor script file under administrative account? - Please attach the GMER autostart scan ...

Thanks for providing the AVG7x Uninstall Utility which I ran earlier today. The program ran just fine and I restarted the computer. A Registry search on my WinXP system still shows a number of AVG7 Legacy keys. The first one in the search, for example, was called LEGACY_AVG7CORE. There are several more and they are repeated in the various Control Sets. What created these Legacy Keys? Are they needed for anything? Thanks, Kent
