AVG 7.5 Technical FAQ » Remote Administration » General information
To connect AVG to Remote Administration, the Remote Administration component has to be installed on this station. This component is available with multi-licence number only. (see FAQ How to install/uninstall AVG components?). After installation of this component you will be asked for connection string to DataCenter.
The connection string should be used in this format:
Configuration of the Remote Administration can be also changed in AVG Control Center -> “Remote Administration” component. (Only if the Remote Administration component is installed).
More information is available in documentation of AVG 7.5 Remote Administration. Please let us inform you that the detailed information is included in documentation of any network version of AVG.
This problem might happen if, when user is connected from Windows 95/98/ME and there aren’t set any profiles on this particular computer (all users have one shared profile). This problem is caused by feature of Windows 95/98/ME, if the system isn’t set properly for more than one user.
Reset means that it returns to the client settings (stations and all users which have profile on this station) to the state after a new installation of AVG.
The message RESET is always sent to the station and all users which have ever been on this station, because all of them have some configuration in there (scheduled tasks, tests).
Important note:
The reset of particular user will be done after this user logs on. After that the message is delivered and done, because it might be that nobody else will have rights to delete the settings. Until the time the message is stored as uncompleted.
There is only ever one Default Setting (one for tests, one for plans and one for rules). It's a set of settings which are used, when you create a new test (plan, rule) – the new test (plan, rule) takes the settings from Default setting, of course the settings can be changed afterwards.
If you have problem with synchronization of AVG and the DataCenter, with connection to DataCenter or AVGAdmin, you will be asked to create log files of this communication. To create this log files please follow these steps:
If you have a problem to connecting AVG to the DataCenter, the files are necessary from this particular station. If you have a problem with synchronization of settings between AVG and DataCenter, there is necessary to create these log files on both computers (station and server), induce the problem (let the logging on for few minutes, to pass the synchronization) and then send these files to support@avg.com. Include in the email the exact description of your problem and the exact program version of AVG and AVGAdmin.
How to create the log files:
- move to:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data folder (for Windows 2000/XP) or
C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data (for Windows 9x) or
C:\Winnt\profiles\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data (for NT 4.0) - create "AdminLog" folder
- restart AVGAMSVR.EXE (AVG Alert Manager) service, AVG Control Centre and close AVGAdmin and launch again.
Please evoke the problem and send us the avg7log*.log file/s from the Avg7Data folder for analysis.
Some folders can be hidden by default operating system setting. If you cannot locate the Avg7Data folder, check your settings.
The logging can be turned off again by deleting adminlog folder.
These objects can’t be deleted from DataCenter even from the station, because they are part of the AVG installation. If the default settings and the running of these tasks aren’t required, we recommend that you disable them.
If you would like to disable the default scheduled test and/or update for users, please do the following:
- Open AVGADMIN and select "Shared Settings For Users" item from the Settings menu
- Select the "Scheduled Tasks" tab and double click on the "Test Plan in Basic Mode".
- Uncheck the "Periodically start scheduled antivirus test" checkbox and click on the OK button to confirm your changes.
- Now open the update schedule and do the same.
Note: If the "Scheduled Task" does not contain any scheduled settings (has been deleted previously) it is necessary to copy them from one of the users' scheduled settings to the Shared User Settings (open the configuration of any user->Scheduled tasks->mark both mentioned scheduled plans->right-click on any of them and choose the "Copy"->"To shared settings" option) and then perform the steps above.
In the event the DataCenter of Firebird becomes overloaded (e.g. an increasing number of clients in the network), we recommend moving the DataCenter to a MS SQL server (or MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition).
Recommended amount of clients for the DataCenter:
Firebird DataCenter: from 0 up to 100 clients
MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition or MS SQL DataCenter: from 100 up to thousands clients
This process can be performed by following these steps:
- Export a current version of DataCenter (backup):
- Be sure to use the latest version of AVGAdmin which is available on web page Downloads-Programs
- If you are using an older version of AVGAdmin, please download the latest installation file and proceed with a Repair installation
- Do not rewrite the DataCenter and configuration file of AVG TCP Server during the Repair installation!
- After the Repair installation is complete, run the current version of AVGAdmin and proceed with the DataCenter conversion. When the conversion is complete, export the DataCenter to an empty folder (AVGAdmin > Program > Export).
- Installation of a new DataCenter on MS SQL (MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition) and the creation of an empty database:
A detailed description of the DataCenter installation for MS SQL server or MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition is available is available here. - Importing the DataCenter backup to the new database:
Run the current version of AVGAdmin connected to empty DataCenter on your MS SQL (MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition) server.
Import the backup of DataCenter created above in the step 1) "Export a current version of DataCenter” by using Program > Import
If you would like to change a license number for all computers in the network, please do the following:
- run AVGADMIN program
- Settings menu - Shared settings for stations
- select License Number in the License Number area
- you can also use Licenses Administration (AVGADMIN - Service - License Administration...)
- fill the new license number and press Enter key
- ask all stations for synchronization (select all needed stations and click on some of them by right mouse button, then please select the Ask for data synchronization option)
- restart of clients' stations is recommended after this change
Please note that if you use also AVG Email Server Edition and this e-mail server is connected to the AVG DataCenter as well, it is needed to create a special group for your e-mail server and do not change license numbers in Shared settings for stations but Shared settings for group of stations. If you use AVG Network Edition license number on your e-mail server, the e-mail server edition functionality will not be supported.
You can check whether a new version of AVGADMIN is available here:
AVGADMIN->Information->Check for updates...
If a new version of AVGADMIN is detected, please do the following:
- Please download the latest installation file of AVGADMIN from the Downloads section of our website
- Please export your DataCenter in the old AVGADMIN (AVGADMIN->Program->Export)
- Close the AVGADMIN program
- Run the downloaded installation file
- Select the “Repair installation” option from the menu
Important:
Please confirm that you do NOT want to rewrite the old database and configuration files, then finish the installation process.
When the installation is finished please run AVGADMIN and convert the old database (if needed).
If AVGADMIN is installed on a different computer than AVG TCP Server, it is needed to do the same on both computers.
If you need to exclude a certain "Potentially unwanted program" from any detection by AVG (for example if you are using an Ad-sponsored program or utility, which could be dangerous, but could also be used with your knowledge), you can exclude it from AVG detection by the AVG Resident Shield, Complete Test in this way:
Please open the AVGADMIN program -> "Setting" menu -> "Shared settings for stations" -> "PUP exceptions" -> right click on the table and choose "Create" from context menu. Now find the file you want to exclude. If you are sure, the file is located in a certain folder on target workstations, disable "Any location - do not use full path" function and fill in the correct path. Now save these settings.
For this setting you will need an exact copy of the file that you want to exclude on the machine where the AVGADMIN program is installed (at least for creating the exception). This is required to create the MD5 checksum "signature" of the exception file.
These exceptions can be used for "Potentially unwanted programs" only. If you set the exception for a viral file (Trojan horse, I-Worm, Worm, W32...), this file will be still be detected by AVG tests and the AVG Resident Shield.
These exceptions are not used for the AVG Email Scanner.
The AVG DataCenter can be moved to a different server according to the instructions below. Please note, that server names FIRST and SECOND represent the current server (where AVG DataCenter is now installed) and the new server (where you want to move AVG DataCenter to).
The text below is applicable if you use the embedded Firebird with AVG TCP Server solution only. The migration of AVG DataCenter running on MS SQL Servers is very similar but varies in the installation.
1. Download the latest installation file of AVGADMIN from our website: http://www.avg.com/doc/Programs -> "AVG Anti-Virus Network Edition 7.5".
2. Export your AVG DataCenter from the FIRST (current) server (use "Program" menu -> Export in AVGADMIN).
3. Install AVGADMIN with AVG TCP Server on the SECOND (new) server. If you want to keep AVG TCP Server settings you may copy the
"C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG TCP Server\avgtcpsv.ini" file to the new server.
4. Import your AVG DataCenter from the FIRST server to the new SECOND server (use "Program" menu -> Import).
5. In the SECOND AVG DataCenter, change the connection string for all stations: choose on "Settings" menu -> Shared settings for stations -> "Remote Administration" section -> Connection string to AVG DataCenter: Here you need to set the new connection string, e.g. http://SECOND:4156/
6. Set also the new connection string in the FIRST DataCenter: go to Shared settings for stations -> "Remote Administration" section -> Connection string to AVG DataCenter. Change the current connection string here (http://FIRST:4156 or maybe empty) to http://SECOND:4156/) to forcibly reconnect all stations to the new server.
After all stations are synchronized, they will communicate with the SECOND DataCenter. It is then necessary that the FIRST DataCenter will be still available until all stations reconnect to the SECOND DataCenter. Please note, some stations may be reconnected after computer restart.
Here is the list of ports which have to be allowed in firewall, so that AVG clients can successfully connect and communicate with AVG DataCenter:
- 4156 (by default or the one set in AVGTCPSV.INIfile) - basic communication between AVGAdmin, AVG Control Center and DataCenter.
- 6051, 6052, 6053 - these ports are used for an "online communication". Both-way communication between AVG Control Center/AVG Alert Manager and DataCenter enables data to be sent immediately after the accomplishment of program, schedule or test settings change as well as sending the test result as soon as the test is finished.
