AVG 7.5 Technical FAQ » Installation » Installation of DataCenter » DataCenter MS SQL
This mode can be used in the environment where the Microsoft SQL server (now supported versions are 7.0, 2000, 2005) is already used and for networks with more than 500 clients. If there is no MS SQL already installed, you can use MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
It can be downloaded from here.
The AVG TCP Server will be connected to the DataCenter using ODBC. That means the drivers for the ODBC must be installed on the machine, where is the DataCenter placed (It is recommended the DataCenter is on the same machine as TCP Server). It is recommended that you use the latest MDAC 2.8 version in the appropriate language for your OS.
You can use these two procedures to create the DataCenter:
1. Using the AVG DataCenter Setup Wizard
Launch the wizard this way: Start > Programs > AVGADMIN 7.5 > AVG DataCenter Setup Wizard. Click on "Next" in the first window > check the "Setup AVG DataCenter" > "Next" > choose the DataCenter type and follow the next steps of the wizard.
2. Using the prepared scripts
You have to run the scripts for creating the DataCenter on MS SQL Server. These scripts are saved in AVGMSSQL.ZIP file. Unpack the archive to a working folder and run them. These scripts are created only when you check “Install scripts” during AVGADMIN installation process.
The standard AVG DataCenter name on MS SQL server is AVG. If you want to change the name, you have to edit AVGmssql.sql, mkAVGserver.bat and AVGADMIN.rsp files
- You can consider creating of special account, by which the clients will connect to the DataCenter. This account should have rights to AVG DataCenter tables only.
- Unpack all files from AVGMSSQL.ZIP to a folder.
- If it’s necessary, edit the mkAVGserver.bat file:
-if the database is created on another computer, change the line SET server=<name of your server>
-if the name of the administrator is different than “sa”, change the line SET u=<login name of administrator>
-save the modified file - If there it’s needed, edit the AVGADMIN.rsp file: change the line Server=(Local) to Server=<name of your SQL server>
- Launch batch file mkAVGserver.bat. If there is everything OK, the batch file is finished without an error message.
- If there is any error message, make all necessary changes (written in the error message) and launch the file again.
- By SQL manager (or another program) set account which will be used by AVG clients for database access. Set rights for reading and writing to AVG tables.
- Set backup and control processes.
We recommend using of AVG DataCenter Setup Wizard for the connecting of AVG TCP Server to the MS SQL DataCenter. This wizard is run automatically when the installation of AVGADMIN is finished, or can be run manually using c:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG TCP Server\setupdc.exe file. Select Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition or Microsoft SQL Server (according to the type of your DataCenter) and follow the setup wizard. In case of any problems, please contact our technical support.
The AVG clients can be connected to the DataCenter using the correct URL as the communication string. The URL has this format: http://<adress>[:port]
Where:
- <address> is the address of the PC where is the AVG TCP Server installed. The AVG TCP Server is connected to the DataCenter on the MS SQL using ODBC drivers. This address can be set as IP address or PC name of the machine, where is the AVG TCP Server installed.
- [:port] is non mandatory port number. The default implicit port is 4156.
If there is the AVG TCP Server installed on the computer named “myserver” and it is using the implicit port, the connection string is: http://myserver:4156
It is necessary that the AVG TCP Server is correctly configured and connected to the DataCenter using ODBC as described in FAQ MS SQL - Connecting the AVGTCP Server to the MS SQL based DataCenter.
