Chief Executive Officer
Gary Kovacs is AVG’s recently appointed chief executive officer and a managing director of our management board. Prior to joining AVG, Mr. Kovacs served as chief executive officer of Mozilla Corporation, where he led the overall direction of the organization and the Firefox web browser.
During his tenure, Mozilla grew significantly. Its core desktop business experienced renewed success with now over 500 million users, and the company has expanded into mobile with the recent launch of Firefox OS, its open mobile operating system and steered Mozilla to a position as industry leader in Internet privacy initiatives.
Prior to joining Mozilla, Gary held senior leadership roles as Senior VP of Markets, Solutions & Products at Sybase through to the successful acquisition by SAP, as General Manager and VP of Mobile & Devices at Adobe where he was responsible for Adobes growth into mobile. Gary has an extensive background building and accelerating international technology companies and has demonstrated his strength in leading global mobile and pc businesses in the past.
Previously, he led the successful creation and growth of Zi Corporation, a company specializing in embedded software and services for mobile and consumer devices. Before founding Zi Corporation, Gary spent 10 years at IBM in leadership positions in product management, sales, marketing and operations within the global software division.
Kovacs is a frequent public speaker and panel member. His 2012 TED talk “Tracking the Trackers” explores issues of Internet privacy in an increasingly connected world and is one of the most viewed TED talks to date. At the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting of the New Champions in 2012, he presented on strategies for creating a resilient cyber economy amid economic, security, and privacy obstacles. He was a keynote speaker at the Mobile World Congress 2013.
Fierce Wireless named Kovacs one of the Rising Stars in Wireless for 2013.
Gary graduated from the University of Calgary, in Canada, with his Bachelor of Commerce and an MBA with distinction.
Gary serves as a board member of ePhox Corporation, Sensory, Inc. and Make-a-Wish Foundation (Bay Area Chapter). He is also a member of the University of Calgary Management Advisory Council.Download high-resolution photo
