Increased the virtual memory and repeated the install with only one change - I said 'no' to the AVG toolbar as well as to Yahoo. I now have a functioning (slowly!) version of AVG9 on a 16 year old clapped out PC. I suspect the virtual memory change is wot fixed it! Thanks all END! Having been in the IT world since 1964, long before PCs and AVG were invented, my programs validated input and told the user politely EARLY when he was being stupid and what he had done wrong! In this case, perhaps AVG should have validated the requirements at the start and told me to get lost? I have used AVG free for many years, and still do, and have never had problems on hardware that isn't 16 years behind the times, so this ISN'T having a go at AVG ...
